INVESTIGATING INTERDEPENDENCE IN PARTNERING DANCE

In dance, interdependence is not just an abstract idea—but a physical
phenomenon that invites deeper investigation. How do our bodies navigate
interdependence in dance? How can we deepen our understanding of
connection through movement?
For over a decade, we—Caroline Alves and Martina Garbelli—have collaborated on a wide range of projects. In 2024, our growing awareness of interdependence inspired us to embark on an independent research journey into a movement vocabulary centered on this theme, culminating in the creation of SHARED DYNAMICS. This practice arises from the continuous negotiation between bodies, movement, and the forces that connect them. Drawing from contact improvisation, contemporary dance, and acrobatics, it explores interdependence as a lived experience: each gesture relies on another, each choice resonates beyond itself. Through falling, supporting, counterbalancing, and momentum, the body learns to trust, to hold, and to be held. Within this space of listening and shared risk, technique and sensitivity intertwine, revealing that dancing in partnership is also a visceral exploration of the web of connections that shape us as human beings.
